What is hard water?

The term 'hard water' is used to describe water with high mineral content, usually salts of Calcium and Magnesium.
The degree of hardness becomes greater as the mineral content increases

How is hard water measured?

Water harness measurement units are usually given in ppm or parts per million of Calcium Carbonate equivalent. Traditionally the amount of TDS(Total Dissolved Solids) is used as an indicator of the hardness of water.

How does hard water affect your hair?

On usage of hard water, the little scales on your hair shaft tend to stand up thus enhancing the risks of rough and tangled hair and increasing the damage during combing, styling or brushing.

Bar soaps, shampoo bars or cleansing bars are less effective in hard water because it reacts with the excess minerals to form salts. These are not easily soluble in water and can result in a soap film which hamper their functioning.

Impact on hair and scalp morphology

Our hair and scalp exhibhit natural negative charge. Excess metal ions are positive in nature, bind to the negative charge present in hair creating mineral deposits. These deposits alter your hair cuticle (the outer transparent protein layer of the hair) making it uneven and rough.

This leads to:
Increased friction and pulling force on the delicate hair follicle during combing, brushing or stylish
Increased propensity for hair breakage and damage
Decolorization of hair, particularly color treatments
Aggravation of dandruff, eczema and flaking caused due to deposits
