Try these tips for frizz-free hair

Frizzy hair comes and goes, and in some cases, it stays! Frizz is a universal problem and whether you have straight, wavy or curly hair - you’re bound to experience hair frizz at some point. Whether it’s the humidity, the heat or hair porosity, we’ve got some frizzy hair tips and best practices you can follow to tame it down and get perfectly controlled, frizz-free hair.

How does hair get frizzy?

The first thing to understand is what causes frizz. Hair comprises various layers, with the outermost one being the cuticle, and this outermost layer and how it reacts to excess moisture is the main reason behind frizz.

Frizz occurs when your cuticles are raised, allowing excess moisture to filter in. Once that happens, your hair fibre swells up, causing frizz. This also causes hair to grow in different, haphazard directions, thereby making frizzy hair prone to chipping & breakage, leading to hair damage.

Hair with low porosity is the most resistant to moisture and therefore frizz, whereas hair with high porosity is most susceptible to damaging moisture and frizz. Moreover, if you have chemically treated or coloured hair and get these types of treatments done often, the chances of you suffering from frizzy, unmanageable hair are higher. Frizz can occur from humidity, hair damage from styling tools or simply dehydration.

But how can you control frizz to get more manageable, tangle-free hair? These easy hair tips to control frizzy hair can help get you started:

1. Get a trim.

regular hair trim - hygiene hair care routine

Frizzy hair suffers from split ends, and split ends can make your hair extremely dry and prone to breakage (which causes uneven lengths). A regular trim as a part of your hygiene hair care routine can help get your hair in place.

2. Use a sulfate free shampoo.

Harmful sulfates in your hair care products can strip away the natural oils from your hair, leaving it dry and frizzy. A pH-balanced, sulfate free shampoo can help keep many of these frizz-related concerns under control. The iluvia Sulfate-free Shampoo is designed with a unique micro-emulsion formula that gently but effectively cleanses hair. This mild formula also works best on chemically treated and coloured hair.

Pro tip: Use normal temperature water while rinsing your hair in the shower.

3. Reinforce your hair care routine with hydrophobic products

When it comes to frizz, water plays a big part. More moisture, more frizz, remember? This is why your regular shower routine should always be reinforced with a good conditioner or a mask (which acts like a conditioner), with added advantage if the product in focus is hydrophobic.

Hydrophobic refers to a quality of a product or an entity to repel water or moisture in its various forms, be it free flowing or naturally occurring like humidity. Iluvia’s Hair Repair Mask is a one-of-a-kind product that is hydrophobic and is designed to repel excess moisture and humidity. The Mask restores your hair and scalp’s natural moisture balance, preventing breakage and frizz caused by humid environments.

Pro tip: Leave on the iluvia Hair Repair Mask for 3-5 minutes before washing off for the best post-shower experience.

4. Use heat protection.

Regular exposure to heat causes frizz (whether it’s from styling tools or direct sunlight). However, if you must resort to heat styling tools, don’t forget to protect your hair. Sizzled hair is prone to frizz and can cause long-term irreversible damage if not paid attention to. A good heat protectant serum creates an insulative barrier to protect your hair from damage and keeps it shiny and frizz-free, much like our Intensive Hair Care Serum.

5. Swap out your cotton pillowcase for a silk one.

Silk is a light and breathable fabric that prevents moisture from getting trapped at the root of your hair. The best part? It minimises friction caused by laying on a pillow and occasional tossing and turning.
